The final day of class will be Tuesday, December 12th.
Due that day will be:
• A printed book outlining your entire semester’s work, organized as a comprehensive design project case study. It should include and document the major design work you created for the class, and express your design process and approach in solving your complex visual communication problem.
• A web-based pdf book published on issuu.com. Issuu is a web platform that publishers, writers, organizations and individuals used to digitally publish their multiple-page magazines and publications online.
• That same day, you will also present your design project and solution to the class, as well as a possible visiting designer. You may use your printed book, your pdf book, and/or a digitally formatted presentation (pdf, powerpoint, keynote, prezi, etc) to aid you in your presentation. You should create a brief content outline for your presentation and choregraph what you will say with what you will visually present. It is suggested that you practice your presentation at least twice before the actual event to boost you self-confident and ensure a successful delivery.
Book Design Content
The purpose of the comprehensive project case-study book is to document and express your design process and approach in solving your complex visual communication problem. The book’s content should be organized, well-written and structured as a message. You might set-up the context of the story of your design journey by writing a problem-solution statement for the overall project identifying you as a designer, your client as an organizaton with a need to communicate a particular message to help empower a particular audience for a particular purpose. Then follow-through with the story of how you created your successful comprehensive design solution.
It should include and document the major design work you created for the class including:
- Your Client’s (Sender) Identity
- Your Designer Identity
- Your Empowerment Design Project
- Your Comprehensive Design Projects
An
international design group which uses case-studies as part of their
website and digital portfolio to promote their work and process is Interstate (www.interstateteam.com). They are a multi-disciplinary design group headquartered in London, but also have offices in LA and Bahrain.
Of particular interest are the online case studies for their publication and book designs. Check out:

Book Design Methodology
The following process is recommended for a successful publication design. Post appropriate process of your design on your class blog. You may also want to include some of your process in your final case-study design book itself.
- A Project Brief
- Visual Research of Design Case-studies and Concepts if appropriate
- A Content Outline
- The Content Outline converted to a multiple-page Flat Plan
- The Flat Plan converted to Preliminary Layout Concept Sketches
- A thumbnail Book Dummy with Tight Layout Sketches or Digital Block-ins
- A Book Grid, complete with margins, columns, gutters, running heads, pages numbers, etc. based upon the Selected Layout Concept
- Graphic Standards (typefaces, colors, graphics) for your Publication based upon the Layout Concept
- Preliminary full-size Page Design Layouts, Markups and Iterations
- A half/full size Dummy Proof of your book prior to printing, carefully proof-read, edited and marked-up for design corrections
- Final Print PDF files export for hi-res printing
- Final Digital PDF files exported for publishingon the web
- Final Publication Printing and Binding
- Final Upload to issuu.com
Information, handouts and templates for Project Briefs, Content Outlines, Flat Plans, Grids and multiple-page Rhythm is found on this class blog at Presentation Book Design Planning under the Class/Project Content label.
Book Design Specifications
The final design project book will be 11x17 (horizontal or vertical format) and most likely 24 pages long or so, with a self-cover. It is to be printed two-sided in full-color, and spiral bound. Print it on a paper stock with appropriate quality, weight and finish. Printing Services in the Union Building and/or their upper campus location has the ability and experience to print and bind a nice book for an incredible price. Communicate with them before hand how they would like you to prepare your design files for printing, and schedule with them to ensure on-time delivery.
P3 - Comprehensive Semester Project
The final class project is a final “designer as entrepreneur” comprehensive project that will include your designer and sender identity, and empowerment design, and more, including the design and printing of a comprehensive project case-study book of your semester-long project, as well as a presentation of the project in its entirety to the class.
Please post a final project schedule outlining the remainder of the semester for your project. I suggest you give yourself at least two weeks to work on and print your design presentation book.
You may also want to include on your blog, any Project Briefs, brainstorming, and research for the Packaging and/or Retail/Exhibit design, as well as any additional design projects you may be including in your final semester project, to ensure success.
The final printed book, as well as digital class presentations of your design solution and process, will be held the last day of class, Tuesday, December 12th.
Special Class Workshops
SketchUp - 3D Rendering Software
For those of you who wish to learn SketchUp to for your design project, I have scheduled the class workshop for Thursday, the 16th.
You will need to have a preliminary floor-plan (with estimated dimensions) for your project sketched out by hand by the beginning of Thursday's class. Be sure to post it to your blog.
On Tuesday, we will get familiar with the program to take advantage of the workshop on Thursday.
Be sure to do the following to prepare for Tuesday’s class on the 14th.
• First, download a free version for education purposes at www.sketchup.com/download.
• Once you have secured the software, then familiarize yourself with the program by clicking on the Learn tab on the menu bar (www.sketchup.com/learn). Next, click on Get Started and if you have time check-out the Getting Started with Sketch-Up - Part 1 video.
On Tuesday, we will view Parts 1, 2 3 & 4 tutorials using using the class screens, while you do the exercises on your individual laptop.
Packaging Design
For those of you who wish to design packaging for your comprehensive semester project, we will hold a class workshop and short field trip on Tuesday, the 14th, then follow-up with a class visit and-in-depth design critique by American Pet Nutrition (www.anibrands.com) packaging designer Lisa Kent on Tuesday, the 21st.
You will have one week to prepare for her visit by going through at least two package design iterations before her visit, so you will have very tight comprehensive design mockups for Lisa to discuss and critique.
I have given Lisa access to your student class blogs to view your process as you work on this part of the semester-long project, so keep your blog current as you work, particularly with your package design so she can see what you are working on.
Lisa has been asked to conduct deep-critiques emphasizing the relationship between formal decisions and the messages of packaging, tailored to the marketing of your product to your particular audience. Also be prepared with lots of questions for a productive discussion around creating successful packaging solutions.

Presentation Book Design Planning
Designing a publication can get complicated. When you are both writing and designing a
book it is imperative that the designer be organized.
A Project Brief
When you start any design, even if it is part of an already existing larger project, you will want to orient yourself to the specific design task by creating a Project Brief for it.
Here is a template you can use to create a Project Brief for your final Presentation Book:
A Content Outline
A designer, often in conjunction with an editor, creates a Content Outline.
Here is an example of the Content Outline for a design project of mine for the revamp design of the 2012 Utah Travel Guide.
I converted the Content Outline for the Utah Travel Guide into to a Flat Plan showing where the contents might appear in the book. The flat plan shows the organization and layout of the entire book/publication page by page as thumbnails and/or notes.
Here is an a Flat Plan template for you to use for your final Project Presentation Book.
Here is an a Project Board template you may also want to use to develop a design concept/theme for your final Project Presentation Book. (Yes, book designs have concepts too).

A Publication Grid
All publication or book designs use strict grid systems. It helps organize content and keep a consistent layout and look through the book.
This
is the Grid I used for my design revamp of the 2012 Utah Travel
Guide. It includes margins, gutters, as well as eight columns per page
that allow a great deal of layout variation including the following page
column relationships: 1 col; 1col x 7 col ; 2 x 6 ; 3 x 5 ; and/or 4 x 4.
Publication Rhythm
One
of the biggest challenges of multiple-page publication or book design
is turning pedantic content into an interesting and visually exciting
rhythmic layout. It helps me if I look at the book I am designing like a
visual piece of music. I try to create a visual rhythm composed of
various visual parts – perhaps a light riff of a visual introduction,
pedantic repeats to set up a beat, followed by a break in the beat, the
pedantic repeat again, then followed by a contrasting visual turn-around
of two or three single pages, followed by the pedantic repeat, then
back to the break, ending with a light summary riff. Here I compare the
layout of a book to the 12-bar blues. You can listen to this design on guitarcompass.com/free-lessons/blues/12-bar-blues/. Just click on the video.
