The final class project is a final “designer as entrepreneur” comprehensive project that will include your designer and sender identity, and empowerment design, and more, including the design and printing of a comprehensive project case-study book of your semester-long project, as well as a presentation of the project in its entirety to the class.
Please post a final project schedule outlining the remainder of the semester for your project. I suggest you give yourself at least two weeks to work on and print your design presentation book.
You may also want to include on your blog, any Project Briefs, brainstorming, and research for the Packaging and/or Retail/Exhibit design, as well as any additional design projects you may be including in your final semester project, to ensure success.
The final printed book, as well as digital class presentations of your design solution and process, will be held the last day of class, Tuesday, December 12th.
Special Class Workshops
SketchUp - 3D Rendering Software
For those of you who wish to learn SketchUp to for your design project, I have scheduled the class workshop for Thursday, the 16th.
You will need to have a preliminary floor-plan (with estimated dimensions) for your project sketched out by hand by the beginning of Thursday's class. Be sure to post it to your blog.
On Tuesday, we will get familiar with the program to take advantage of the workshop on Thursday.
Be sure to do the following to prepare for Tuesday’s class on the 14th.
• First, download a free version for education purposes at www.sketchup.com/download.
• Once you have secured the software, then familiarize yourself with the program by clicking on the Learn tab on the menu bar (www.sketchup.com/learn). Next, click on Get Started and if you have time check-out the Getting Started with Sketch-Up - Part 1 video.
On Tuesday, we will view Parts 1, 2 3 & 4 tutorials using using the class screens, while you do the exercises on your individual laptop.
Packaging Design
For those of you who wish to design packaging for your comprehensive semester project, we will hold a class workshop and short field trip on Tuesday, the 14th, then follow-up with a class visit and-in-depth design critique by American Pet Nutrition (www.anibrands.com) packaging designer Lisa Kent on Tuesday, the 21st.
You will have one week to prepare for her visit by going through at least two package design iterations before her visit, so you will have very tight comprehensive design mockups for Lisa to discuss and critique.
I have given Lisa access to your student class blogs to view your process as you work on this part of the semester-long project, so keep your blog current as you work, particularly with your package design so she can see what you are working on.
Lisa has been asked to conduct deep-critiques emphasizing the relationship between formal decisions and the messages of packaging, tailored to the marketing of your product to your particular audience. Also be prepared with lots of questions for a productive discussion around creating successful packaging solutions.
